Ways to use squashed or stale bread

Got a loaf of bread that got squished in the grocery bag? Or maybe you live alone and can’t get through a whole loaf before it goes stale? Don’t throw it out: Try one of these ideas instead!

Breadcrumbs

  • Place bread slices into an oven preheated to 250°F until hard and golden brown about 30 minutes
  • Crumble slices into a bowl until reduced to fine crumbs

Bread Pudding

  • Heat ¼ cup butter and 2 cups milk over medium heat until butter is melted
  • In a bowl, mix 2 eggs, ½ cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp salt
  • Stir in 6 slices of cubed bread and ½ cup raisins
  • Stir in milk and butter mixture
  • Place into a deep pan and bake for 40-45 minutes

Croutons

  • Brush slices of bread with melted butter
  • Cut bread into small cubes and sprinkle with garlic salt
  • Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes or until browned

Panzanella

  • Slice 1 loaf of bread into 1 inch cubes and place in oven heated to 300°F for 20 minutes
  • Combine bread and a chopped cucumber, bell pepper, and onion in a bowl
  • Add ½ cup of vinaigrette and stir well
  • Let marinate for ½ hour to 4 hours
