Across Middle and West Tennessee, 1 in 8 people experience food insecurity – including 1 in 6 children. At the same time, nearly 40 percent of our country’s food supply ends up in landfills. With your help, we can change this. Second Harvest takes in donated surplus food from grocery stores, farmers, and others, diverting the supply from landfills to instead empower our neighbors.
We are working toward a future in which everyone in our community is food secure and zero food is wasted. Your support is making it possible.
Our volunteers are the heartbeat of Second Harvest. Help empower your neighbors and have a blast doing it!
We’re here to help. Pick up your food at any of our locations around Middle & West Tennessee, including our mobile pantries.
Bette’s story is marked by tragedy, trauma, and life-threatening experiences. But she found hope in Second Harvest’s supplemental food program for seniors, and it even saved her life.
After surviving a near-fatal attack by her husband in 2011, Bette White found herself deeply in debt due to her husband’s financial crimes. She slowly recovered and gained stability, but COVID-19 brought a loss of income and rising rent. Forced to choose between a roof over her head or food on the table, Bette was later hospitalized due to the effects of starvation. That’s when a hospital worker told her about Second Harvest.
Bette spent many months building a relationship with Jess, a Federal Program Client Liaison at Second Harvest. One morning when Bette did not answer the door, Jess investigated to find that Bette had fallen. She’d been suffering alone on the floor, unable to move, for three days.
“They saved my life,” says Bette.
