For over 45 years, we have shown up with food. Not with leftovers, but with abundance. Yet we know that neighbors facing food insecurity often have needs beyond food as well. To minimize food insecurity across the board, there are wide-reaching root causes and social determinants of health to consider and address.
We also know we cannot help solve all of these challenges on our own. While distributing food is a critical and necessary part of our work, to truly help our neighbors thrive, we must take a holistic approach to support, made possible by strong partnerships.
Second Harvest looks beyond immediate needs to long-term transformation, both for individual neighbors and our community as a whole. We are committed to helping provide food for today, food for tomorrow, and food for a lifetime.
We believe that access to food is a human right. This foundational belief encompasses the work we do to ensure our neighbors have the nutritious food they need to fuel their day-to-day lives now. This includes our regular food distribution through our Partner Agencies and program sites, our Mobile Pantries, our Neighbor Care Pantries, and more. We are intentional about making sure our neighbors receive quality, nutritious food that supports their overall health. Whether we are serving seniors, people with unique health or dietary needs, or responding with culturally sensitive offerings, we believe in being a good neighbor so everyone can receive food that nourishes and empowers them to thrive.
We believe in meeting our neighbors where they are with compassion. Food is a critical entry point into the greater conversation of addressing people's holistic needs, beyond food access. We help provide food for tomorrow by partnering with local agencies and resource providers to connect our neighbors with the services they need to thrive.
We believe in the power of connection, and our staff has unique expertise to help neighbors navigate the SNAP program, access Medicare, find legal help, secure housing, and more. Our dedicated team members build relationships with their neighbors to get to know their unique needs to build toward stability long-term. We are an integral part of the food system in our area, partnering with grocery stores, local farmers and growers, and others to make sure quality food is not wasted but directed to people who need it. We believe in stewarding the resource of food in a dynamic and efficient way. We are working toward a future in which everyone is food secure and zero food is wasted.
Second Harvest is committed to helping our community develop sustainable, long-term solutions to the challenges that contribute to food insecurity so that ultimately, we can end it altogether. We offer support like workforce development, nutrition education, and additional resources with strategic partners in the community. We want to equip future generations to not only be self-sustaining, but to truly flourish.
To do this, it takes a village. To do this, it takes an ecosystem of partners with a unified vision toward sustainability for our neighbors and our community. Each partner has a meaningful role to play. We continue to incorporate this holistic support in new ways as we move forward and grow year after year.
