Plant a Row for Second Harvest

Plant A Row is a people-helping-people program that encourages gardeners to grow a little extra and donate the produce to their local food bank. The program was launched in 1995 by the Garden Writers Association.

Sharing can happen on many levels. Home gardeners, schools, churches, youth groups, and community organizations can all help their neighbors who are struggling with food insecurity.

How It Works

  • Plant and harvest food in your garden that’s designated specifically for Second Harvest. Or, when you have a prolific season, donate your excess produce to Second Harvest.
  • Email Valerie Reta to make arrangements to drop off your food at Second Harvest, so we can be ready to receive it and make sure we have a place to store it.
  • Then Second Harvest will distribute your homegrown produce to local families through our feeding programs and Partner Agencies.

Growing Tips

Produce that can withstand some travel, stores well, and is popular with our clients includes:

  • Root veggies like carrots, beets, and radishes
  • Summer crops like potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, squash, corn, and green beans
  • Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage

Help us grow

Share photos of your produce on social media throughout the season, and be sure to tag @2harvestmidtn. Every share is an opportunity to bring more gardeners on board!
