Decades of Dedication

Did you know that when Second Harvest started 46 years ago, we were almost entirely comprised of volunteers? Our journey began in 1978, driven by the vision of a few compassionate individuals who recognized the urgent need to address hunger in Middle Tennessee. In those early days, our operations were small, but the dedication and passion of our initial volunteers set a strong foundation for growth and community engagement. Their tireless work in sorting, packing, and distributing food created the first ripples of change that would expand far beyond their expectations.

As we expanded our reach, so too did the scope of volunteer involvement. From the families who spent their weekends helping in our warehouses to corporate groups who took part in large-scale food sorting events, each volunteer has been integral to our operations. It’s through their hands that we’ve been able to distribute millions of meals over the years—each box packed and each can sorted is a testament to their generosity and spirit.

As we celebrate this 46th anniversary, we look forward to the future with optimism and excitement. The landscape of volunteerism is ever-evolving, and we are committed to adapting our strategies to meet the changing dynamics of our community needs. We encourage more people to join us, to continue this legacy of service and to help write the next chapter of our history.

This Volunteer Appreciation Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to every volunteer who has walked through our doors. Your dedication has not only helped us reach this 46-year milestone but has also ensured that we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands. Together, we have proved that the power of community can overcome the biggest challenges.

Thank you for standing with us, for sharing our vision, and for your unwavering support. Here’s to many more years of service, growth, and shared successes.
