Summer came early for 5-year-old Angela and her fellow classmates at Glenview Elementary in southeast Nashville, as the pandemic prematurely closed her school in early March.

“I love school!” says the energetic kindergartener. “I miss my friends and teachers.”

Angela, like many students across Middle and West Tennessee, is also missing the free school meals she received while school was in session.

A troubling 99% of children at Glenview qualify for free breakfast and lunch – meals that go away when summer begins. For parents, the cost of an additional 10 meals per child per week is a real struggle. Now with record job losses and missed paychecks due to COVID-19 – plus school letting out 2 months early – this summer is especially tough for families.
