Last weekend, we joined together with local government officials, college students and community volunteers to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a four-day volunteer sort-a-thon.
Beginning Friday, January 15th through Monday, January 18th, we hosted special volunteer opportunities to make it easy for groups, families and individuals to spend a day in service and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
On Saturday, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, Representative Harold Love, Jr. and Congressman Jim Cooper shared remarks on the significance of the day and the importance of service. Students from Belmont, Vanderbilt, Trevecca Nazarene, Lipscomb and Tennessee State Universities participated, as well as Harpeth Hall School students, alumnae and faculty and Robertson County YMCA Teens.
Volunteers helped to sort donated non-perishable and frozen food. Altogether, 730 volunteers sorted more than 99,000 pounds of food during the four-day sort-a-thon, providing more than 82,000 meals to children, families and seniors at risk of hunger throughout 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee.
With 1 in 6 Tennesseans, including 1 in 4 children, it is imperative that the community takes action to end hunger. We are grateful to our volunteers for helping our efforts working toward our mission of feeding hungry people and working to solve hunger issues in our community.
