Mientras enseñaba a sus hijos, Aviva aprendió algo importante
When Aviva Wasserman’s children were small, she brought them to Second Harvest for family volunteer nights. She wanted her kids to see how fortunate they were and to understand that not everyone is so lucky.
“It turned out the message I wanted THEM to get had a large impact on ME!” she says. “There are so many things that should be a right and not a privilege, food security among them.”
Aviva, who lives in Nashville, sometimes feels overwhelmed by the enormity of community needs. But she knows at Second Harvest — where $1 helps provide four meals — even small acts can make a big difference. That’s why she’s been a monthly donor for the past seven years.

“Consequently, I have never known hunger,” William said. “If there is one thing I can do to honor my mother’s memory and legacy, it is to make sure that I can help someone have food.”
“I don’t have much, but I can always find a few dollars to share so that at least one person can eat,” he said. “God blesses us to bless others.”

Kids who had nothing to eat at home for breakfast knew if they saw the nurse, they’d eat.
After 30 years, Polly retired. But that memory stuck. It’s what motivated her to become a monthly donor to Second Harvest 15 years ago.
Polly said although she doesn’t have a lot of money, she knows her small, monthly donations add up to make a big difference. The Sumner County resident loves that her gifts help Gallatin teachers connect with their struggling students through food from the School Food Pantry and BackPack Program.

Every day after a healthy breakfast, Laura went to school with a packed lunch, and returned to her mom’s homemade dinner. On Sunday after church, Laura’s 97-year-old grandmother still makes a family lunch that rivals holiday meals.
“It is unimaginable to me what hunger and food insecurity feels like, and I know how fortunate I am to have never been in that position,” said Laura, a marketing manager for Sprint who lives in Christiana.
Motivated by gratitude, Laura and her husband, Andy, are monthly donors. “I see the direct impact Second Harvest makes in my community, and I am so grateful to them for all the lives that are improved by their work.”
