Elyse Bell: “I want to be a part of the solution to hunger”

This April, Second Harvest Food Bank is highlighting one of our regular volunteers from our Camden Distribution Center in Benton County.

When did you start volunteering with Second Harvest?

January 9, 2020

What is your favorite volunteer opportunity?

I enjoy volunteering in sorting and boxing dry goods or frozen meats. I try to imagine a parent or a child receiving one of the food items and how excited they will be to enjoy a healthy meal.

We enjoy a regular team of weekly committed volunteers, as well as college groups who join us throughout the year as a part of their studies in nursing and education.

Describe your favorite volunteer memory?

After volunteering at the warehouse for several weeks, I began participating in a drive-thru distribution at my local church, which is a Second Harvest Partner Agency. It was exciting to be a part of the process from sorting the food to serving the people.

Why it is important for you to volunteer?

West Tennessee is comprised of people who are older and poorer than many parts of the state.  Food insecure families are struggling to put food on their tables during these difficult times of high unemployment. I want to be a part of the solution to hunger.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Second Harvest?

Second Harvest has a staff and volunteers that are committed to providing nutritious meals to the least, the last and the lost.
