Together we can make this a #HungerFreeSummer for children in Middle and West Tennessee.
We are living in unprecedented times. With children unexpectedly out of school and thousands of parents suddenly out of work because of COVID-19 closures, the challenges low-income families typically face in the summer came much earlier this year.
One in three children in Tennessee rely on free school meals. When schools close, those kids are at risk of hunger.
Children like Jazelle, a 5th grader from West Nashville. She is among thousands of local kids who don’t always have enough to eat. Without access to free breakfast and lunch at school, Jazelle and others are a lot more likely to go hungry.
Fortunately, Jazelle is able to get the food she needs through Second Harvest Food Bank’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides breakfasts, lunches, or suppers to help ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.
SFSP sites include community centers, libraries, day camps, schools, and other programs that also offer enrichment and fun activities for children over the summer.
Including the West Nashville Dream Center, a Second Harvest Partner Agency and SFSP site, where Jazelle and other children receive the food they need to grow and thrive when not in school.
Join Second Harvest and Piedmont Natural Gas in making this a Hunger Free Summer for all children in our community – every $1 donated provides four meals. We need your help!
