Join our Volunteer Feeding Corps!

Mike JoynerWe’re looking for dedicated volunteers to join our Feeding Corps!

Are you a food sorting pro who enjoys the camaraderie of our sorting shifts? Are you a Second Harvest supporter looking to commit more time to our mission of feeding hungry people and working to solve hunger issues? Then the Feeding Corps may be for you! Our Volunteer Feeding Corps assists Second Harvest staff with volunteer food sorting groups on a more regular basis.

Every Feeding Corps volunteer experience is different. Some of our Feeding Corps volunteers assist food bank staff in leading volunteer groups–training volunteers, motivating them, and leading a debrief at the end of the shift. Other Feeding Corps volunteers prefer to work one-on-one with other volunteers, out of the spotlight–this could include circulating through the room to check on morale and answering questions, keeping the room stocked with pallets of food to sort, or managing specific areas of the sorting process (box making, sorters, packing, recyclers, etc.).

We also depend on the Feeding Corps to be advocates for Second Harvest, willing to share our mission with others and educate them on volunteer opportunities and other ways that others can get involved with us. The Feeding Corps program is critical to organizing and managing the 30,000+ volunteers who come to Second Harvest each year. The Feeding Corps directly impacts Second Harvest’s ability to package and sort donated food, and they ensure that we do it as accurately and efficiently as possible.

Projects will vary based on product supply and demand. Projects may include:

  • Evaluating, sorting, and boxing non-perishable food donations from supermarkets and other stores
  • Assembling food boxes and bags for school feeding programs and senior feeding programs
  • Evaluating, sorting, and boxing frozen or perishable food donations in our 40 degree cooler
  • Bagging bulk produce into family-sized portions

If you are interested in being part of the Feeding Corps, please complete out the application. All applicants need to have completed at least 6 volunteer shifts at the food bank prior to applying. Volunteers need to attend an orientation (offered as needed) and commit to at least six months before they begin volunteering as a Feeding Corps volunteer.
