Nutrition Fun with Students!

As part of Nutrition Month, we partnered with LifePoint for a special nutrition lesson at an after-school site.

LifePoint volunteers help at an after-school site nutrition lesson.

Easley Community Center is one of Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s Kids Cafe sites. Our Kids Cafe program provides free meals, snacks and nutrition education to at-risk children during the school year and summer months. Easley Community Center feeds 100 kids, ages 6-14, snacks from Second Harvest during its after-school program. Second Harvest staff and dietetic interns teach nutrition lessons to approximately 40 kids at the center a few times each month.

This week, LifePoint volunteers joined our registered dietitian for an interactive nutrition lesson. The theme for the day was “Eat Your Greens” which played into the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Children were divided into three separate stations where they competed in a”food group relay race”, nutrition trivia and got to make and sample a green smoothie.

Kids Cafe participants learn how to make a green smoothie.

The activities provided a great opportunity for children to engage in the topic of nutrition and learn important lessons that can help them make healthy choices in the future.

We’re so grateful for the work that our Registered Dietitian does to help the people we serve lead the healthy, active lifestyles they deserve and to partners like LifePoint for enabling us to continue the work we do in the community.

We hope you will join us this Nutrition Month to help us build healthy communities for everyone here in Middle Tennessee.
