Joshua: “I want to provide for local communities to create a better Tennessee”

This July, Second Harvest Food Bank is highlighting a young volunteer who spends his summer breaks helping sort and pack food items for his Middle Tennessee neighbors in need.

When did you start volunteering with Second Harvest?

I started volunteering during the summer of 2018. I had initially heard about volunteering opportunities from my school, Montgomery Bell Academy, which started yearly initiatives with Second Harvest to raise awareness and donations for food insecurity.

What is your favorite volunteer opportunity?

My favorite volunteer opportunity is sorting and boxing frozen goods. Since I can only volunteer over the summer, the coolness of the freezer gives relief from the summer heat.

Describe your favorite volunteer memory?

While I don’t have a specific favorite volunteer memory, I always create great memories with fellow volunteers. Working alongside people with such diverse backgrounds creates meaningful experiences, as I often learn about people and places that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Why it is important for you to volunteer?

For me personally, it is important to volunteer in order to support to the most vulnerable within the community. Furthermore, I want to provide for local communities to create a better Tennessee in general.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Second Harvest?

Volunteering at Second Harvest is so much more than just giving back to and supporting local communities. In fact, the bonds and relationships that you make while working are so incredibly meaningful.
