How did Second Harvest Get Started?

1978 was the year everything changed in the fight against hunger in Middle and West Tennessee. 46 years ago, the foundation was laid for the creation of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Born from the collective commitment of over 30 public and private food assistance entities, on this day the initial groundwork was laid to create Second Harvest. While Second Harvest is always evolving, we hold true to our core principles that were created in the Metro Action Commission offices in 1978.

Second Harvest was always more than just a food bank; it was a vision of unity. From the beginning, we were envisioned as a coalition that combined and supported the efforts of already existing agencies, and to efficiently direct resources to those in need. The committee decided on three principles to be the backbone of newfound hunger relief organization:

  • Second Harvest would be ready to act in an emergency feeding program that would go into action when normal food distribution channels were shut down.
  • Second Harvest would make food available to those who need it.
  • Second Harvest would take donations of salvageable food that otherwise might be discarded to distribute.

As we look back over 46 years, we see a history rich with dedication and a future bright with promise. For example, Second Harvest has consistently risen to the challenge of providing essential food in the wake of natural disasters not only in Tennessee but across various states. Also, our commitment to making food accessible and sourcing it responsibly through food drives, grocery rescues, and donations remains unwavering.

Our organization is interwoven with the fabric of our history and community. As we commemorate our 46th anniversary, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you – our supporters, volunteers, and partners – for being an integral part of this journey. Here’s to the past 46 years of fighting hunger.
