Natalie, 11, lives with her parents and older sister, Olivia, 15, near Gainsboro. She has good insight into her family’s situation for her young age. 

“We can’t go buy a ton of groceries like all these other people can,” she says.

Natalie’s mom has a disability that keeps her from working, and her dad hasn’t been able to make money due to business closures. He’s a furniture maker, and the stores that sell his work were shut down for months. The family was relying on savings and retirement funds when they found out about New Hope Baptist Church Care Center, a Second Harvest Partner Agency.

The pantry has been distributing food at a drive-thru at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Natalie has been worried about contracting the virus — especially since her aunt was infected. 

Natalie appreciates the extra steps the pantry is taking to keep her and her family safe, and she loves the food. On a recent visit, Natalie and her mom, Betty, were able to pick up yogurt, apples, and salad to fill their family’s table.

“Thank you for putting your hearts out and doing this for us,” Natalie says. “You’re amazing people.”

“We are very thankful for you and for the food,” Betty adds.
