Food Banks Can’t Fight Hunger Alone

Learn more about SNAP – the most effective anti-hunger program in the United States and our communities’ first line of defense against hunger.

“We are very grateful.” –
Second Harvest Food Bank clients and SNAP recipient Claudia with her two children (Natalie, 11, Mateo, 5)

It is projected that 1 in 8 Middle Tennesseans – including 1 in 7 children – are facing hunger now, many because of the pandemic. We all have a stake in using our voice to ensure our neighbors have enough to eat. Through actions big and small, we all can take steps to move the needle on hunger.

This includes advocating for the strengthening of federal, state, and local programs that help our neighbors access the food they need. SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as “Food Stamps,” is one of those vital programs.

SNAP is the nation’s first line of defense against hunger. It provides food benefits that are timely, targeted, and temporary. SNAP benefits are delivered monthly through electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards which can be used to purchase groceries at retailers nationwide.

SNAP FAST FACTS:

HELP DURING CRISIS

During natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and in times of historic rising costs, SNAP is helping many of our neighbors who have suddenly found themselves in the unfamiliar situation of not being able to put food on the table for themselves or their families:

  • Disaster SNAP that helped hundreds of Middle Tennesseans impacted by the March 2020 tornadoes.
  • Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) continues to help Middle and West Tennessee families with school-aged children access the meals they missed while school were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about this critical food program. Your continuing support of Second Harvest and Feeding Programs like SNAP, are playing a vital role in providing our neighbors facing hunger with access to the food they need.
