Donna: “I feel so grateful to have the time and motivation to help those in need.”

This August, Second Harvest Food Bank is honoring longtime volunteer Donna Dane, whose work to fight hunger continues to inspire staff and volunteers.

When did you start volunteering with Second Harvest?

I have been volunteering with Second Harvest for more than five years. When I decided to inquire about volunteering at the food bank, I met a very nice young man, Brandon Shaw, who gave me a tour of the facility. He talked with me about how the volunteer opportunities were greatly needed to help those in need. I was so grateful he took the time to inform me of the issues.

What is your favorite volunteer opportunity and favorite volunteer memory?

One of my first and favorite volunteer memories and one that I will always, always remember, is the day I volunteered at a Second Harvest Mobile Pantry near the airport. I remember the church hosting the event opened their doors and there were grocery carts available to families, who were told they could take whatever they needed. Most families had children with them. I was stationed at the door where they exited. I will never, ever forget how gracious they were. That was my first experience personally helping my neighbors facing hunger and I was so proud to be a part of that day.

Why it is important for you to volunteer?

I feel so grateful to have the time and motivation to help those in need. I am older now and I understand the how much these families need support.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Second Harvest?

I wish the best to Second Harvest and their Volunteer Engagement team!!
