Building a Sustainable, Inclusive, and Resilient Food Future

Second Harvest is committed to building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food future.

Every year, World Food Day reminds us that food is a tool for connection, community, and care. This year’s theme, “Water is Life, Water is Food,” calls attention to the shared responsibility we all have to protect the resources that nourish us.

Here’s how we can work together to create a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food future.

Hands gently hold a small green plant sprouting from rich soil in a field, symbolizing growth, sustainability, and the shared goal of building a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food future.

1. Support Local Solutions

Strong communities start with local partnerships. By sourcing from Tennessee farms and investing in regional food systems, we reduce waste, shorten supply chains, and keep food, and jobs, close to home.

2. Reduce Food Waste

Nearly 40% of food in the U.S. goes uneaten. Through partnerships with grocers, manufacturers, and farmers, Second Harvest rescues millions of pounds of good food each year and delivers it to families in need

3. Make Nutrition Accessible

Healthy food shouldn’t be a privilege. Our programs, from Mobile Pantries to Healthcare Pantries, provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to help neighbors improve their health and well-being. Nutritious food builds resilient families.

4. Empower for the Future

Fighting hunger isn’t just about today’s meal. Our programs help neighbors gain skills, stability, and access to resources that support long-term independence. Sustainable solutions start when everyone has the tools to provide for themselves.

5. Work Together

Creating a sustainable food future requires all of us to collaborate. When we share resources and ideas, we can build food systems that are fair, inclusive, and strong enough to withstand future challenges.

A Shared Future

On World Food Day 2025, we celebrate everyone who helps nourish Middle and West Tennessee. Together, we can create a food future that is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient for generations to come.
