SNAP Outreach Program

In honor of Hunger Action Month, we wanted to bring attention to one of our outreach programs – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).   SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy families so they can purchase healthy food and move towards self-sufficiency.   It is the largest program working to fight hunger in the United States.   Last year in Tennessee alone, it reached 903,000 Tennessee residents or 1 in 8 (13%). SNAP is important to the community because 90% of benefits are spent after only three weeks, thereby bolstering local economies.

Second Harvest’s SNAP outreach program trains Partner Agencies to become SNAP Outreach Partners, as well as helps individual clients apply for SNAP benefits. As a SNAP Outreach Partner, agencies assist clients in applying for benefits by completing the paper application with them, providing general program information, and referring clients to Second Harvest’s SNAP assistance line with questions.

If you’re interested in helping your clients apply for SNAP benefits or in learning more about SNAP outreach at Second Harvest, download the SNAP Partner Manual for further information. If you are interested in becoming a SNAP Outreach Partner, contact Kate Pearce at or 615-782-2071.
