AgencyLink Nutrition Ranking

While shopping on AgencyLink, Second Harvest’s online ordering site, you may have noticed that all food items are labeled as green, yellow or red. These colors indicate how healthy the food item is.  Because both Second Harvest and our Partner Agencies are committed to distributing quality and nutritious foods, our hope is that these rankings will help you provide a healthy mix to clients.

Green foods are the healthiest choices. Choose these often as they contain important nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals and limited amounts of sodium, added sugars and saturated fats. Examples include:

  • Meat/Proteins: Chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, beans
  • Grains: Brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat bread, whole grain cereals, whole grain crackers and snacks
  • Dairy: skim milk and low-fat yogurt
  • Vegetables: Fresh, frozen and canned
  • Fruits: Fresh, frozen and canned in juice
  • Beverages: water, skim milk

Yellow foods are items to choose only sometimes. They provide some nutrition, but not as much as green foods. They may also contain too much sodium, saturated fat or added sugars to be considered a green food. Examples include:

  • Meat/Proteins: Beef, pork, deli meat, peanut butter
  • Grains: white pasta, rice, crackers and bread, mac and cheese, sugary cereals, crackers
  • Dairy: 2% or Whole milk, sugary yogurts, cheese
  • Vegetables: frozen in high fat sauces, vegetable soups, baked beans
  • Fruits: Fruits canned in heavy syrup
  • Beverages: fruit juice, diet drinks

Red foods provide little to no nutritional value and contain high amounts of sodium, saturated fat or added sugars. These foods should be used sparingly. Examples include:

  • Meat/Proteins: Bacon, salami, hot dogs, fried meats
  • Dairy: ice cream
  • Beverages: soda, sugary sports drinks
  • Snacks: cookies, cakes, desserts, chips, candy
