Hunger Does Not Take a Vacation

Guest blog by Rebekah Jacques, Second Harvest Nutrition Manager and RD

Children’s Feeding programs are more important than ever during the summer months as many of the children who receive free or reduced breakfasts and lunches during the school year may not have access to healthy meals when school is not in session.  Several of Second Harvest’s Kids Cafe sites have been open throughout the summer to offer meals to children during their summer vacation.

During the months of June and July, Second Harvest also has had the opportunity of sponsoring breakfast for 12 other sites through the Summer Food Service Program.  As the summer comes to an end and everyone is getting reading to head back to school, we are looking forward to starting a new series of nutrition lessons at each of our Kids Cafe sites.  Dietetic interns from Vanderbilt University and Lipscomb University will be working with me this Fall and Spring to help create and teach nutrition lessons to children ranging from Pre-K to the 8th grade.
