Turn Live on the Green Orange

With help from Team Green and Lightning 100, Live on the Green this Thursday, September 9th is going orange in honor of Hunger Action Month!  Bring your non-perishables with you to the concert and drop them in the food drive boxes. While you’re there, you’ll enjoy tunes from Visual Artist, Hightide Blues, Five for Fighting, and Tonic. With this talented lineup, Live on the Green will be one great evening of music, fun, and philanthropy!

There will also be plenty of volunteer opportunities if you would like to get involved while enjoying the concert at Public Square Park. There’s no need to worry if you can’t attend Live on the Green on the 9th. There are volunteer opportunities available every Thursday until October 14th.

Fighting Hunger Together with Walmart

Guest blog by Josh Cotton, Market Manager Nashville Area for Walmart Stores Inc.

In May of this year Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced a $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment, to help end hunger in America. The new five-year initiative, “Fighting Hunger Together,” includes four key components:

  • Donating more than 1.1 billion pounds of food from Walmart stores, distribution centers and Sam’s Club locations, valued at $1.75 billion.
  • Grants totaling $250 million to support hunger relief organizations at the national, state and local levels.
  • Collaboration with government, food manufacturers and other corporations that are fighting hunger to increase impact and reach a greater number of families in need.
  • Mobilizing Walmart associates and customers. For example, having our store associates and customers focused on efforts for the September Hunger Action month.

The associates of Greater Nashville Walmart are committed to the efforts of ending hunger in Middle Tennessee. The stores will sponsor food drives throughout the month of September to support Hunger Action Month.  The efforts put forward by the local associates here in Nashville can help raise awareness to the vast need for struggling individuals.  It is alarming to me that in Tennessee 1 and 5 children are at risk of food hunger. The fact that the need for food assistance has increased by 50 percent over the past 5 years shows that organizations such as the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee are more important than ever before. Walmart is committed to turning these trends and eliminating food hunger.

Kroger’s Melissa Eads Shares Her Way to Fight Hunger

Guest blog by Melissa Eads, Community Relations Manager at Kroger

Kroger's Melissa Eads and Second Harvest's President and CEO Jaynee Day help unload a donation of Smithfield Hams.

I am excited to be a part of Hunger Action Month both personally and through my company, Kroger.  Through this campaign Second Harvest is making it easy for all of us to help fight hunger.  I will be part of a group of 40 Kroger associates who will participate in the 24-hour Sort-a-Thon by volunteering to sort food for a three hour shift on September 10th.   I also plan to donate to the food bank by purchasing preassembled food bags for $6 at Kroger.  Did you know you can donate food 365 days a year at your neighborhood Kroger store?  I also plan to attend the Stars for Second Harvest concert at The Ryman on September 28th.   If you have never attended this event, you are missing out on some great music and entertainment.   You just never know who songwriter Craig Wiseman will invite to join him.   Over the years I have seen Tim McGraw, Jon Bon Jovi, Ronnie Dunn, Randy Owen, Luke Bryant, and many more at this event.

Hunger affects more than 1 in 8 Tennesseans with 1 in 5 children at risk for hunger.   Join me and so many others by getting involved in Hunger Action Month.  Find your way to give by going to www.ThirtyWays.org!

Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month, and we invite you to join us as we fight hunger in communities across Middle Tennessee. Second Harvest Food Bank has identified at least one way each day of the month you can get involved, and we’re calling it “30 Ways in 30 Days.”

Hunger affects more than 1 in 8 Tennesseans. It’s a big problem, and every year we see more and more people in need of food assistance. The 30 Ways in 30 Days campaign gives us real actions we can take to fight hunger here in Middle Tennessee. By joining us and choosing YOUR WAY, you are taking a stand and saying HUNGER IS NOT OK!

Joining the fight against hunger has never been easier. To add your voice, go to www.ThirtyWays.org and follow these three simple steps.

1. Take the Hunger Action Month Pledge!

The local food bank who receives the most pledges by the end of the month will win a truckload of food for hungry people in their community!

2. Find YOUR way

Once you’ve taken the pledge, find your personal way on the 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar, and sign up to let us know you’ve found your way. You can sign up for as many ways as you like!

3. Spread the word!

We want everyone to take the Hunger Action Month pledge, so once you’ve chosen your way, invite all your friends and family to make the pledge too! If we all work together, we can make great progress in the fight to end hunger.

Thanks for helping us fight hunger and feed hope!
